Structural gardeners graft house-root into their own bodies to feel rot before a branch fails. Sela has supported a tenement for twenty years. Event ### Interdimensional Transit — Arrival Ned wakes under a floor that rises with a woman’s breathing. He cuts what he thinks is a root strangling her wrist. Upstairs, a bedroom drops several inches. ### Event The Tenant in Her Ribs Sela makes him bind the severed root before anyone notices. Her tenants are not villains: several cannot afford another home, and she has helped raise their children. But when Ned offers to fetch a surgeon, their first question is how long the work would interrupt the water. Sela asks Ned to bring her the unused wooden braces stored beneath the stairs. He can help fit them; he cannot calculate whether they will hold the whole building. The tenants must leave their rooms and carry their own weight down the ladders. With the house emptied, Sela lets the surgeon divide the graft. Her first breath without the building is shallow and entirely hers. ### Interdimensional Transit — Departure Ned falls asleep outside the treatment room. The proposed coda finds Sela alive on assisted breathing in a ground-level room. The tenement is condemned until its owners pay for supports.
