A cultivated organism behind the eyes can turn a person’s nervous activity into warm light. Former lamplighter Ada performs artificial dawns for clients who have never seen the sun. His account makes the show more beautiful and her symptoms worse. The client requests one final, full sunrise for a dying friend; Ada accepts because the fee would clear her debt. At the performance Ned tells the room how the light is made. The client offers to cancel. Ada refuses to let either man make her last choice for her, then deliberately performs a brief grey dawn instead of the purchased spectacle. She stops while she can still distinguish the doorway. In the proposed aftermath, Ada has debt, diminished sight, and no further performances booked. She teaches technicians to make an imperfect electric dawn.
